Three golden rules in Switzerland

  • Greet people when entering shops & on mountain trails: say "Grüezi" (German-speaking Switzerland), "Bonjour" (Romandy), or "Buongiorno" (Ticino) when stepping into a bakery, cable car, or passing hikers on a trail.
  • Punctuality & quiet trains: SBB trains depart to the second. Keep conversations low, never play phone audio on speaker, and respect marked Quiet Zones (Ruhezone) in First Class.
  • Respect Sunday & night quiet hours (Nachtruhe): after 10:00 PM and all day Sunday, avoid loud noise in residential areas, don't recycle glass bottles at public bins, and note that supermarkets outside major rail stations are closed on Sundays.
