Rules of thumb when building a Switzerland route
- Every hotel change costs half a day: use well-connected rail hubs like Lucerne (for Mt. Pilatus, Rigi & Titlis) and Interlaken / Grindelwald (for Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn & Lauterbrunnen) rather than switching hotels every night.
- Fly open-jaw if you can: landing at Zurich Airport (ZRH) and flying home from Geneva Airport (GVA) lets you traverse Switzerland via the GoldenPass Express without backtracking.
- Use SBB luggage services on scenic transfer days: if you want to hike between mountain stations or ride the Glacier Express hands-free, use SBB station-to-station or door-to-door luggage transfer and carry a light daypack.
