Packing tips for Switzerland

  • Dress in the 3-layer Alpine system: even in July, temperatures can be 26°C (79°F) by Lake Geneva and −2°C (28°F) on the Jungfraujoch or Klein Matterhorn two hours later. Always pack a breathable base layer, fleece or merino mid-layer, and wind/waterproof shell.
  • Polarized sunglasses & SPF 50+ sunscreen: UV radiation reflected off high-altitude glaciers is intense year-round.
  • Refillable water bottle: over 1,200 public fountains in Zurich alone—and village troughs across the Alps—flow with crisp, tested drinking water (unless marked Kein Trinkwasser).
  • Plugs: Switzerland uses Type J (3 recessed round pins) and Type C (2-pin Europlug) at 230V / 50Hz. Notice that thick German/French Type E/F Schuko plugs do NOT fit recessed Swiss sockets without an adapter!
