Switzerland train luggage & locker rules every traveler should know

  • No baggage size surcharge on SBB trains: unlike airlines or high-speed rail in some countries, SBB CFF FFS does not charge extra for large suitcases or require pre-booked baggage seats, provided you can carry your own bags onto the train in one go.
  • Where bags go on SBB & panoramic trains: cabin bags fit on overhead racks or between back-to-back seats; medium and large suitcases (68–80 cm) go in the floor-level luggage racks near the carriage doors. On double-deck IC2000 trains, avoid dragging heavy 29" trunks upstairs—use the lower-deck racks.
  • SBB Station Lockers (Schliessfächer): Zurich HB, Geneva Cornavin, Bern, Basel SBB, Lucerne, and Interlaken Ost have digital lockers paid by contactless card or QR code: Small (CHF 6–7), Medium (CHF 8–9), Large (CHF 9–10), and XL/XXL (CHF 12–15 for 24h).
  • SBB Luggage Forwarding (up to 25 kg per item): ship suitcases station-to-station across Switzerland (CHF 12 per bag plus CHF 20 shipment fee) or book SBB Door-to-Door hotel delivery so you can hike or stop at a lake town along the way with only a daypack.
