Switzerland Power Plug (Type J & C) & 230V Voltage Checker

Check whether your phone/laptop chargers, CPAP machine, hair dryer, or straightener work on Switzerland's 230V 50Hz electrical grid and whether you need a Swiss Type J 3-pin adapter.

Switzerland uses 230V / 50Hz electricity with recessed 3-pin Type J outlets (which also accept thin 2-pin Type C Europlugs). Select your home country and devices below to check whether you need a Swiss Type J plug adapter, a voltage converter, or if your European Schuko (Type E/F) plug will get blocked by Switzerland's recessed hexagonal sockets.

Why Switzerland's Type J socket catches even European travelers off guard

  • Thin 2-pin Europlugs (Type C) fit directly; thick 2-pin Schuko plugs (Type E/F) do NOT: Swiss wall outlets are recessed hexagons with three 4 mm round holes. Thin, flat 2-pin phone chargers fit right in, but round German/French laptop and hair-dryer plugs (Type E/F with 4.8 mm pins) will not fit without a Schuko-to-Type-J adapter.
  • Look for "INPUT: 100–240V ~ 50/60Hz": every modern phone charger, MacBook/laptop brick, camera charger, and CPAP machine is dual-voltage and works safely on Switzerland's 230V grid with only a physical plug adapter.
  • Never plug a 120V-only US hair dryer into a 230V Swiss socket: Switzerland's 230V grid delivers nearly double the voltage of North American 120V outlets and will burn out a single-voltage 120V hair dryer or curling iron. Use the 230V hair dryer provided in virtually every Swiss hotel room!
